10 Allowable Expenses Sole Traders Often Miss

Last reviewed: November 2026

Every allowable expense you claim reduces the profit you pay tax and National Insurance on. These are the ten we most often find clients have missed.

  1. Mileage: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles from April 2026, if you use simplified expenses.
  2. Working from home: a flat £10 to £26 a month, or a share of your actual household costs.
  3. Phone and broadband: the business share of your bills.
  4. Accountancy fees: including the cost of your tax return.
  5. Bank charges and card fees: on your business account.
  6. Insurance: public liability, professional indemnity and business contents.
  7. Tools and equipment: claimed in full under the annual investment allowance.
  8. Protective clothing and uniforms: but not everyday clothes.
  9. Training: that keeps your existing skills up to date.
  10. Subscriptions: professional bodies, trade journals and business software.

Keep receipts for everything. Costs that are partly private, such as a phone or car, can only be claimed for the business part.

We go through your costs line by line to make sure nothing is missed. Ozvite sa nám.
